NEWS Carl Nanders joins CCO as 2011-12 Concert Master.
Carl Nanders has been engaged with music his whole life.
He began studying the violin at 3, eventually under Eugene Kash at the Royal Conservatory, and enjoyed masterclasses with David Zafer, Cho-Liang Lin, and Yehudi Menuhin. He later joined the Fading Ways Music Canada roster as an artist and in-house composer/arranger. Carl has released an album and 2 EPs with Aceface, toured with Neil Leyton, and works intermittently as a freelance songwriter/arranger. He also loves singing, and playing 1960s soul-inspired bass.
When not earning a living or making music, Carl's pleasures include reading political science, watching soccer and playing with his cat.
Carl joins us as a result of an audition process championed by departing Concert Mistress Adriana Robertson who will be missed as she returns to London where she will attend a teaching program at Western's Faculty of Education.
Thank you Adrianna for your outstanding contribution to the formation and leadership of our orchestra.
There remain a few openings in both violin sections.
Our summer recruiting effort has attracted several promising new players to our midst. All signs point to this as being a tremendous year for the orchestra which makes it an especially exciting time to join. ▶ eMail if you're interested coming along for the ride!
CCO is a downtown Toronto collective of talented non-professional musicians who gather to foster an appreciation for music and community.
An eclectic bunch, our members are serious about the importance of music in our lives, each having taken the study of music to a higher level at some point.
We play traditional chamber repertoire for strings but dabble in jazz, pop, folk, and tango. We love trying new things and resonate with opportunities that open new doors.
We think differently than many typical community arts groups:
None of our members are paid.
We have never applied for public money from arts funding institutions.
All members contribute to our artistic, marketing and administrative welfare.
In essence, our board is our collective membership.
Most community orchestras charge an annual fee to participate, CCO does not.
We do not audition. Membership is dependent on artistic and non-artistic contribution and "fit".
In addition to an annual 4-concert season at Little Trinity Church
(425 King East at Parliament), we've performed for Corktown Residents Association community events, The Dominion on Queen and with a Led Zeppelin tribute live broadcast from the Hard Rock Cafe on Q107.
We were engaged to perform at the 2008 Toronto Interior Design Show opening gala and a fundraising gala in support of Toronto's magnificent Evergreen project at The Brickworks.
Music Director Paul McCulloch is at our helm.
In addition to heading the Havergal string program, Paul's credits include the Hart House Chamber Orchestra, the Huronia Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Conservatory Chamber Orchestra and the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
We rehearse Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm

We are grateful to the administration and congregation of Little Trinity for their generous accommodation of our rehearsal and performance schedule.

SHOCK THE MONKEY
This is the arrangement that got Toronto violinist Alex Cheung complimentary accolades from Peter Gabriel in the remix competition Realworld produced a few years ago. This video is a moment from our Feb 24 concert, an aggregation of small chamber groups spawned from the Corktown Chamber Orchestra and friends including Iris Rodrigues (operatic solo), and Alex Cheung (violin) and Chris Patheiger (lead vocal) of The McFlies. Also a member of
The McFlies, CCO cellist Steve McNie played accordion.
Our recordings of the Holberg Suite (excerpt) (Grieg) and the String Sextet No. 1 in B flat major op. 18 (Brahms) are on our online player. Hear them now:
